The Pool is alive, with the Sound of Music

My wife loves, no, adores the Musicals - given the choice, every disk in our car's changer would be a cast recording of something from Broadway or The West End. Yesterday evening therefore, found us at Breichat Hasultan, Sultan's Pool, in the shadow of the Old City walls, singing along to the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra's "Sound of Musicals" - part of the Israel Festival which is currently going on at venues around the country.

For two hours, we were transported to the magical world of Phantom, Cats, Les Mis, Joseph, Fiddler, Evita and many, many more - my wife singing along with every single one (fortunately a stunning voice is amongst her many talents). Many of the crowd were doing the same - Shira BeTzibur is very popular in Israel - getting together and singing along with all the favourites, but generally it's done to the tunes of Naomi Shemer and Ehud Manor rather than those of Andrew Lloyd Webber and George Gershwin.

The Sultan's Pool is a great location for a show - there is a decent sized stage and plenty of terraced seating at the end closest to the Cinematheque. Unfortunately, it was a cold night and many people left early as a result - I'll dress warmly for next time - which will hopefully be Sunday night, Erev Yom Yerushalayim, when one of my favourite Israeli bands, Etnix are playing at the same venue. Tickets are going for NIS 30 so I'm crossing my fingers that they're not sold out - I only just noticed the gig now and will be making some phone calls on Sunday morning. If anyone fancies coming let me know - my better half will be otherwise occupied.

Update Sunday Morning: There are tickets left - I called 623-7000 for mine and found friends to go with.

Leave me a comment if you're interested or drop me an email.

Gilly
