I suffer from a particularly cruel type of insomnia; every week having reach Shabbat exhausted and in need of recharging the batteries I succumb to a wonderful, relaxing, cholent-fuelled sleep on Shabbat afternoon. For every Shabbat there is a Motzei Shabbat however and every week I lie in bed on Saturday night, wide awake, thoughts running through my head as I prepare for another bleary-eyed start to the week.
This week I had the additional bonus of the clocks going back an hour. Usually a blessing marking an extra hour in bed, for me it marked an extra hour to kill before heading for the office.
I've found that the time spent awake is often well spent however; the house is quiet, Mrs. G fast asleep, phone undemanding - nothing worth watching on TV. No disturbances in other words and great time to get stuff done. Last night I managed to do laundry, clean the ovens, unload the dishwasher, iron a huge pile of shirts (how did I amass so many of the damn things?), write a couple of long emails and various other minor things around the house.
Whilst clearly, I'd far rather be curled up in bed, that quiet time in the small hours of Sunday morning is great - time to think and to mentally prepare for the week. Just wish I didn't feel like death warmed up on Sunday morning.
Shavua Tov,
Gilly

I know that feeling all too well, at least shabbat afternoons will now be too short for sleep for another six months!
In order not to mess up my whole schedule, I MUST NOT SLEEP on Shabbat afternoon. Sugar is the key. I eat something sugarey right after lunch on Shabbat. Then, when everyone goes to sleep, I go for a walk. By the time I come back, I'm all pumped up and Shabbat is almost over.
I suffer from Insomnia sometimes during the week - a least Saturday night you have rested somewhat! Hey Gilly - anytime you wanna come clean and iron shirts in the middle of the night is fine by me :)
